Istanbul, between mystery and splendor: my trip in images
Istanbul in light: My photographic journey – May 2024
To visit a city once is to discover it. To go back, it is to build a deeper bond with her. I had the chance to walk the streets of Istanbul twice, and on every trip the city offered a new face, a new look at its timeless soul.
What fascinates me here is this cultural richness that permeates every stone, every alley, every look exchanged. Istanbul is a crossroads, a link between Europe and Asia, where influences intersect and merge in a singular harmony. Its thousand-year history is found in its walls, majestic mosques, adorned palaces and lively bazaars.
But for a photographer, Istanbul is much more than a fascinating city: it is a real Eldorado of the image. Everywhere, the light dances on the domes, the contrasts clash between shadow and brightness, and each corner contains a scene to capture. Here, architecture does not only contemplate itself, it lives, it feels, it photographes itself.
Rather than a simple chronological account, I want to make you discover places that have marked, those who inspired me and who, through my eyes, tell the story of Istanbul. Between splendor and mystery, let me take you through this fascinating city, where the East and the West meet.
The Galileo Bridge: a game of shadows and lights
Istanbul is a city of contrasts, and the Galata Bridge This is the perfect reflection. Here, everything is picture material: the silhouettes of the fishermen, the moving reflections on the water, and in background, the majestic New Mosque which dominates the horizon.
The daylight sculpts contrasts. The shadows of the passers-by stretch over the concrete, the domes of the mosque capture the golden glow of the sun, and the red trams pass through the scene like a bright touch of color on an urban canvas. Every moment is a moving picture, a composition where the city vibrates under my objective.

NightEverything changes. The signs of the restaurants light up, projecting their lights on the dark water of the Bosphorus. The mosque, bathed in light, becomes almost unreal, offering a sculptural silhouette on the night sky. Here, the challenge is to capture this felt atmosphere, these shadow and light games that transform the city into an almost cinematic setting.

Photographing Galata is juggling between the raw realism of the day and the dream magic of the night. An inexhaustible playground for the photographer's eye.
The new mosque: a moment suspended

Located at the entrance of the Eminönü district, the New Mosque (Yeni Cami) is actually a monument full of history. Built in the 17th century under the Ottoman Empire, it dominates the Golden Horn with its elegant domes and slender minarets. Inspired by the great imperial mosques, it fits perfectly into the architectural landscape of Istanbul, between tradition and majesty.
As a photographer, some moments seem to stop, as if suspended in time. It is the effect of this mosque, especially when the sky simmers at sunset.
In front of this monument, the eye is immediately attracted to the alignment of minarets, erected like silent guards, watching over the city. The golden light gently touches the domes, revealing textures and architectural details with infinite delicacy.
Through the lens, one does not simply capture a building, but the soul of the city itself. Each stone seems to tell a story, each shadow brings a touch of mystery. The contrast between the blue domes and the burning sky creates a perfect composition, where the heat of the colors rivals the coldness of the stones.
It is also the moment when the city calms down, where the effervescence of the alleys gives way to an almost meditative calm. Prayers resonate in the distance, and it's like time itself slows down, offering viewers a moment of eternity.
To me, photograph the New Mosque At this golden hour, it is to capture the very essence of Istanbul: a city where the past and the present mix together, where the stone and the sky meet in perfect harmony.
Blue Mosque: a masterpiece in all its lights

In the heart of Istanbul, facing Holy Sophie, stands one of the most emblematic mosques in the world: the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii). Built in the 17th century under the reign of Sultan Ahmet I, it was to surpass in splendor all the other Ottoman mosques. Its impressive architecture, with its six minarets – a rarity at the time – and its 21,000 blue ceramic tiles from IznikHe gets that nickname.
But for a photographer, it is at night that his magic is fully revealed. As soon as the projectors light up, the grey stone light up with a silver tint, and the light plays sculpt every detail of its architecture. The contrast between the deep blue of the sky and the golden glow of the domes creates an almost unreal scene, where the mosque seems to float over the city.
Behind my goal, the stake is to capture this mystical atmosphere and find the perfect angle to sublimate its majestic proportions. Tripod firmly anchored, adjusted settings, each shot becomes a quest for harmony between light and shadow, between sharpness and softness.

What is particularly appealing is the details: the arabesques finely chiseled on the domes, the symmetrical regularity of the minarets, the softness of the luminous halo that seems to envelop the entire monument. It is not just a matter of photographing an architecture, but of freeze a moment of contemplation, a moment when Istanbul reveals its soul under a veil of light.
The Great Bazaar: Labyrinth of lights and colors
With his more than 4,000 shops and its nearly six centuries-old history, the Great Bazaar of Istanbul (Kapalıçarşı) is much more than just a market. It's a world in itself, a city in the city, where you can easily get lost between the vaulted alleys decorated with frescoes and the stalls overflowing with treasures.
From the entrance, the atmosphere is striking: a mixture of voices, perfumes of spices and leather, bright colours and lights that dance on any exposed object. A paradise for a photographer.

A game of light and matter
In this bubbling universe, my gaze is immediately caught by traditional lighting shops. Suspended from the ceiling, their elegant shapes and bright colors create a fascinating game of shadows and light. Each lantern seems to tell a story, and by photographing them, I seek to capture the contrast between the darkness of the shop and the hypnotic brightness of their colorful mosaics.

Crafts, soul of the Bazar
Further on, a scene catches my attention: a craftsman calligrapher, focused on his work, tracing with almost meditative precision the arabesques of a traditional inscription. Behind him, his workshop is filled with elegantly decorated frames, each bearing the imprint of ancestral know-how. One moment suspended, where tradition continues before my bewitched eyes.

Flavors and textures as far as you can see
Then, an explosion of textures and colors: a stall of loukums and oriental pastries arranged in perfect pyramids. The gaze is immediately attracted by the lively tones of pistachios, saffron and candied fruits, contrasting with the whiteness of the ice sugar. As a photographer, the challenge is to translate the sensory intensity of the scene : geometric shapes, the light that caresses the surface of sweetness, and this almost palpable sensation of greed.

Every corner of this huge market is a scene in itself, a moving picture where light, colours and textures interlacing to create a unique, vibrant and timeless decor.
Fresh break: grenade juice, a must in Istanbul
After the effervescence of Big BazaarA stop is necessary. Everywhere in the city, pomegranate juice merchants tirelessly squeeze these bright fruits, giving passers-by a refreshing break.

Behind his stand, the seller handles his mechanical press with dexterity. On the crystal, open grenades reveal their ruby grains, contrasting with the lively orange citrus. A set of colors and textures irresistible for the photographer's eye.
The first contact is visual, but it is by carrying the glass to my lips that magic works: an explosion of freshness, sweet and acidified.
Istanbul is not only discovered with the eyes, but also with the palace. And this pomegranate juice is one of the most emblematic flavors.
Cruise on the Bosphorus: between two continents
Navigate on the BosphorusIt's kissing the soul of Istanbul. This mythical waterway, a natural border between Europe and Asia, offers a unique perspective on the city. From the deck of the boat, Istanbul reveals itself from a different angle: Imperial mosques, Ottoman palaces, wooden villas and modern skyscrapers succeed each other in a fascinating mix of eras and styles

The Bridge of Bosphorus: a monumental trait of union
The most impressive moment comes when the boat passes under the Bridge of the Bosphorus (15 Temmuz Şehitler Köprüsü). Suspended in the air, he alone symbolizes the encounter between East and West. Under this huge steel arch, the perspective changes : the silhouettes of the passengers are cut off against the city that moves away, and the modernity of the work contrasts with the mosque Çamlıca that dominates the Asian shore.

The sun declines behind the Bridge of the Bosphorus, projecting its last rays through the suspended cables. The sky simmers with golden and orange hues, contrasting with the dark waters of the strait. Under this spectacle, the silhouette of the buildings is cut into Chinese shadows, giving the city an almost unreal dimension. A last shot before returning to the shore, capturing the moment when Istanbul turns from day to night in spectacular light.

The cruise on the Bosphorus is coming to an end, and returning to the Galata BridgeThe city offers a fascinating last scene. The low sun on the horizon lights the streets, projecting a golden light on asphalt and tram tracks.

The silhouettes of the cars are cut in this intense radiance, their headlights gradually simmering as the night approaches. In the background, the domes and minarets of Istanbul blend into a luminous mist, reminding that this city lives at the rhythm of the sun, between shadow and reflections.
Capture this moment, it's freezing The unique atmosphere of the end of the day, this moment when the city slows down for a moment before diving back into the night agitation. One last image before leaving the docks, as a perfect conclusion to this crossing between two continents.
Meeting on the docks: Galata artist
Sometimes a journey is so marked by places by meetings. On the docks along the Galata BridgeI met an artist whose humility and generosity touched me deeply.

Installed there, at the heart of this urban agitation, it seemed out of time. His trait was quick, precise, but he took the time to discuss, to exchange, as if every word was as valuable as every pen stroke. He was not trying to impress but only to sharing art and humanity.
His concentrated look, his hand that easily slipped on the paper, his fluid and controlled gesture... I wanted to catch this moment. It wasn't just a portrait, but a testimony, a way of saying that I haven't forgotten..
Some faces remain engraved in memory long after it has left a place. His is one of those.
The Word of the End: Istanbul, an Indelible Fascination
From my first visit, Istanbul captured. This city is not content to be beautiful, it lives, feels, permeates in us.
As a photographer, I was amazed by its lights, architecture, colors. Every street, every reflection on the Bosphorus, every silhouette cut into the sky offered a new composition, a new story to capture. But beyond the images, it's Human which marked the most : warm welcome, sincere hospitality, this incredible cultural diversity where East and West meet and mix harmoniously.
Through this testimony, I wanted to share this unique experience, these moments frozen by my goal, but above all intensely experienced. Istanbul is not just a destination, it's a meeting. A city that grabs you and never leaves you.

A photo without emotion remains an image.Your camera captures scenes, but it's your story and emotion that give life to these images.
Turkey is one of those countries where photography takes on another dimension
But I strongly recommend that you explore the depths of the country, where images become even more powerful.
The Cappadocia, with its fairy chimneys and balloons floating at dawn
Konya, cradle of turning dervishes
Pamukkale, with white limestone terraces
These are quotes I had the opportunity to visit last summer
Hi humble traveller.
Thanks for this beautiful virtual journey filled with relevant information and enriched by your usual beautiful feather. If there was an equivalent for the travel accounts at Gallimard my Friend, you would have easily dethroned that impostor of Kamel Daoud. ✌️
Thank you my dear friend for your comment and for taking the time to read it elsewhere I am not on the same register as Kamel Daoud
That I don't make you tell my dear. Nothing to do with imposture and authenticity. Go on like this. 😉
